With the aid of a cooling plant, heat is taken away from a place that needs to be cooled and transported to another place, where it is re-released into the environment. The cooling energy can be used, for example, to air-condition buildings and in process cooling.

To maintain the ongoing process in the plant, either mechanical (compression and VRF cooling systems) or thermal (absorption cooling systems) energy, or even both forms of energy, must be supplied.
